Applicable to all sandwich year students
- September start
- £1200 fee for the year (total tuition fee – standard tuition fees do not apply for sandwich year placements)
- For undergraduates and postgraduates with a sandwich year option
- Based in the Hallam i-Lab with free tenancy
- 25 hours per week commitment (3 day equivalent)
- Work part-time alongside the placement
- Fully supported by the Enterprise Team
- Regular appointments with our Enterprise Advisers and Start-up Adviser
- Peer reviews (get feedback and support from your peers)

You may apply for multiple sandwich year programmes but please contact us to discuss this before applying.

Start-Up
If you already have a business idea you would like to pursue, then the Start-Up placement is the right choice for you. You can apply as an individual, partnership or as part of a group* of up to 5.
*If you are applying as part of a partnership or group, you will still need to complete an individual application.
This placement will give you the opportunity to experiment, test and develop a specific business idea, with the aim of generating a profit. You don’t need a business plan to apply, just an idea that you are passionate about, plenty of enthusiasm and commitment.
Freelancer
The Freelancer placement is ideal for students who aspire to develop their professional profile in the creative and digital sectors. You might want to use this placement to either, set yourself up as a freelancer and test the market, or develop an existing client base. This placement will help you to:
- explore and find your own unique style
- take responsibility for yourself and proactively find work that you are interested in
- work on different pieces of work with a range of fee paying clients
- build a stellar portfolio of experience and project outcomes
This self-directed placement runs for 44 weeks (5 September 2022 – 7th July 2023). You will be supported by the Hallam Enterprise Team.
Collaborate to Innovate
The Collaborate to Innovate placement is designed for students who are looking for an opportunity to team up with students from other courses to devise a project or business venture idea from scratch. This includes socially and environmentally aware initiatives.
Within your team, you will experiment, test out and develop your chosen idea to take it from concept to reality.
Please note that applications are on an individual basis only. You do not need a project or business idea to apply. All you need is good teamwork capability and plenty of enthusiasm and commitment.
This self-directed placement runs for 44 weeks (5 September 2022 – 10th July 2023). You will be supported by the Hallam Enterprise Team.
Online Publication
The Online Publication placement gives teams of up to 5 students the opportunity to team up and launch their own online publication. You will work together to decide on its theme and content, with the aim of building an active readership.
Key areas of your work will be:
- Research and development
- Website design and management
- Writing and editing
- Guest writer management
- Social media strategy
- Search engine optimisation
- Networking and building a contact base
Please note that applications are on an individual basis only. We are looking for students who demonstrate good teamwork capability, and plenty of enthusiasm and commitment.
This self-directed placement runs for 44 weeks (5 September 2022 – 10 July 2023). You will be supported by the Hallam Enterprise Team.
Game Development
The Game Development placement has been created for students who are looking to team up to design and produce a game.
You apply as an individual or team* of up to 5.
*If you are applying as part of a team, you will still need to complete an individual application.
Within your team, you will design and develop your game to take it from concept to reality.
The placement will be supported by mentorship from Kudos QA who will provide industry insight as well as feedback on your development.
This self-directed placement runs for 44 weeks (5 September 2022 – 10 July 2023). You will be supported by the Hallam Enterprise Team and Kudos QA.
Film and Photography
The Film and Photography placement has been created for students who are looking to team up to explore or produce an output for film or TV, or individuals who want to develop their photographic entrepreneurial practice.
You apply as an individual or team* of up to 5.
*If you are applying as part of a team, you will still need to complete an individual application.
The placement will be supported by mentorship from Kurious Studios and Square Share Media who will provide industry insight, in addition to feedback on your development.
This self-directed placement runs for 44 weeks (5 September 2022 – 10 July 2023). You will be supported by the Hallam Enterprise Team and Kurious Studios.
