Enterprise Action Week

Every November, the Enterprise Team hosts a whole range of exciting workshops, competitions and activities for SHU students to get involved in and test out their enterprising skills.

You don’t have to have the ambition to become self-employed, just a real desire to develop your creative and innovative skills and get some fantastic experience that you can add to your CV and impress employers with. 

You will get the opportunity to network with students from across all faculties and make new friends and contacts.

Do you want to do something different and challenging with your sandwich year that will really impress potential graduate employers? Have you an idea for your own commercial or social venture that you would like the opportunity to test out? Alternatively, perhaps you would like the opportunity to work as part of a student company managing the Hallam Pop-up Shop or running the Enterprise online magazine?

11:30 – 12:30

Do you want to run your own business but you’re not sure what to do? This workshop helps you come up with new ideas. It will outline the key steps in generating an idea and how to take it to the next step.

To help you have that light bulb moment we will enliven your creativity and curiosity. This workshop will also help you work out what forms a good idea (interests, passion, and values) and how it can be developed (goals, motivation and risk taking). You will learn practical tips on turning your idea into a reality.

Setting up your own website has never been easier for those who don’t feel they have the right digital and technical skills to achieve this, but with so many web design platforms to choose from it can be difficult to find the right one that will help you stand out online.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to set up a website we can help you achieve your goal. Examples for your website might include: blogs; portfolios; profiles & CVs; showcasing products for sale.

You will be introduced to key branding and design tips, including domain names, email addresses and how to protect your intellectual property. You will be also be introduced to some of the best online web design platforms currently available, with an emphasis on WordPress and Squarespace and how to get started.

Projects, ideas, products, services…whatever you want to communicate online, it can be difficult knowing where to start.

This workshop will walk you through some of the most effective platforms to use when communicating your project or business and show you how to use keyword research to target your audience, in addition to outlining some of the hottest tips in how to get found online. We will also uncover some of the pitfalls of social media as well as some of the benefits.

The Business Model Canvas gives you the structure of a business plan. We will be covering the need to know information regarding the Business Canvas Model as a business start-up template. The Business canvas model is a model that you use to define the components of your business. It offers an interactive way to look at your current business model and improve your results. It’s a way to keep moving forward with an iterative business plan.

What will be covered?

– Explain the concept and how it works.
– Run through an example of how to complete it.
– Take the group through the step-by-step process of completing one for their own idea.
– Closing discussion/feedback on potential usefulness as a planning tool, not only for their new business but also for organising individual marketing/promotional campaigns such as when a new product launches or seasonal campaigns such as Christmas.
– This session will be useful for those with an enterprising idea, business start-ups and developing businesses. This session will also be useful for those overwhelmed with the idea of starting your business plan and don’t know where to start, offering a useful template to work with.

The student led Sheffield Hallam Enactus team supports Hallam students to set-up sustainable projects which will help make a positive difference to the lives of people from local and regional community groups.

Hallam Handmade

The Hallam Hand Made Arts & Craft market takes place every November as part of the Enterprise Action Week. This is a fantastic opportunity for creative arts and design students to sell their own products to Hallam staff and students as well as the general public. In previous years, the range of products on sale has included: jewellery; clothing; prints; illustrations; artwork and textiles. The Enterprise Team will support your preparation which includes advice on pricing and  product display.

Work for Yourself Fair

Interested in working for yourself? Talk to those who have already taken that step and successfully set up their own commercial or social enterprise ventures. 

From very early start-ups to established businesses trading over a number of years, you will have the opportunity to talk to them about the highs and lows of being self-employed as well learn about their products/services. The day also includes Q&A sessions and a networking event.
